Wine 101: What is Orange Wine?

By Brian Lemay No comments

Okay, well firstly, orange wine has got
nothing to do with oranges. It’s a wine made with white wine grapes but made in
a red wine style, so you end up with all this extra texture and it’s fermented on
skins. Now, why is it fermented on skins? because it gives the wine heaps more
complexity, it gives it a sense of body and structure, and it means that it
can pair with all these unusual foods that you normally wouldn’t be able to
pair it with. So for instance, something that’s really cool is that you can get
kimchi and other kind of crazy food varieties that you might have not
normally be able to pair wine with and stick an orange wine with it, and it just
tastes sensational.
