Willamette Valley named Best Wine Region of 2016

BURN OUT FOR A WHILE BEFORE THEY PUT IT OUT. DAN: THIS YEAR, WINE ENTHUSIAST MAGAZINE NAMED THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY THE 2016 WINE REGION OF THE YEAR, AND IT BEAT OUT SOME PRETTY STEEP COMPETITION. JENNIFER: THIS IS A BIG DEAL. CLAIRE ANDERSON TAKES A LOOK AT WHAT THE AWARD MEANS TO THE OREGON WINE INDUSTRY AND THE PEOPLE WHO STARTED IT ALL. I THINK THERE’S SOME SIGNIFICANCE IN THE SENSE THAT THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY HAS SORT OF CONSIDERED TO HAVE COME OF AGE IN A CERTAIN SENSE. REPORTER: THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY STARTED GROWING GRAPES OVER 50 YEARS AGO AND NOW IT IS ONE THE BEST WINE REGIONS IN THE WORLD. EVERY YEAR WINE ENTHUSIAST MAGAZINE HONORS INDIVIDUALS, COMPANIES AND REGIONS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE WINE AND BEVERAGE WORLD. THIS YEAR, THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY CLAIMED TOP WINE REGION OF 2016. I THINK THE AWARD IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT RECOGNIZES THIS 50 YEARS OF EFFORT ON THE PART OF THE INDUSTRY AND THE UNIQUE ASPECTS OF THIS INDUSTRY. REPORTER: THE OREGON VALLEY WAS UP AGAINST SEVERAL FAMOUS LOCATIONS, INCLUDING TWO AREAS IN FRANCE, GREECE, AND THE SONOMA VALLEY. OBVIOUSLY IT HAS KIND OF GROWN FROM VIRTUALLY NOTHING 50 YEARS AGO TO OVER 700 WINERIES IN THE STATE AND OVER 500 IN THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY, AND PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD NOW KNOW ABOUT IT AND COME AND VISIT. REPORTER: WILLAMETTE VALLEY HAS BEEN UP FOR THIS AWARD TWICE BEFORE, BUT THIS YEAR IT MEANS EVEN MORE TO RECEIVE THE RECOGNITION. IT’S REALLY A RECOGNITION THAT PEOPLE IN THE WINE INDUSTRY ALL OVER THE COUNTRY KNOW ABOUT THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY AND VALUE
