What would happen if you didn’t sleep? – Claudia Aguirre

By Brian Lemay 76 comments

In 1965, 17-year-old high school student,
Randy Gardner stayed awake for 264 hours. That’s 11 days to see how
he’d cope without sleep. On the second day,
his eyes stopped focusing. Next, he lost the ability
to identify objects by touch. By day three, Gardner was moody
and uncoordinated. At the end of the experiment,
he was struggling to concentrate, had trouble with short-term memory, became paranoid, and started hallucinating. Although Gardner recovered without
long-term psychological or physical damage, for others, losing shuteye can result
in hormonal imbalance, illness, and, in extreme cases, death. We’re only beginning to understand
why we sleep to begin with, but we do know it’s essential. Adults need seven to eight hours
of sleep a night, and adolescents need about ten. We grow sleepy due to signals
from our body telling our brain we are tired, and signals from the environment
telling us it’s dark outside. The rise in sleep-inducing chemicals, like adenosine and melatonin, send us into a light doze
that grows deeper, making our breathing
and heart rate slow down and our muscles relax. This non-REM sleep is when DNA is repaired and our bodies replenish themselves
for the day ahead. In the United States, it’s estimated that 30% of adults
and 66% of adolescents are regularly sleep-deprived. This isn’t just a minor inconvenience. Staying awake can cause
serious bodily harm. When we lose sleep, learning, memory, mood, and reaction time are affected. Sleeplessness may also cause inflammation, halluciations, high blood pressure, and it’s even been linked
to diabetes and obesity. In 2014, a devoted soccer fan died after staying awake for 48 hours
to watch the World Cup. While his untimely death
was due to a stroke, studies show that chronically sleeping
fewer than six hours a night increases stroke risk
by four and half times compared to those getting a consistent
seven to eight hours of shuteye. For a handful of people on the planet who
carry a rare inherited genetic mutation, sleeplessness is a daily reality. This condition,
known as Fatal Familial Insomnia, places the body in a nightmarish
state of wakefulness, forbidding it from entering
the sanctuary of sleep. Within months or years, this progressively worsening condition
leads to dementia and death. How can sleep deprivation
cause such immense suffering? Scientists think the answer lies
with the accumulation of waste prducts in the brain. During our waking hours, our cells are busy using up
our day’s energy sources, which get broken down
into various byproducts, including adenosine. As adenosine builds up, it increases the urge to sleep,
also known as sleep pressure. In fact, caffeine works by blocking
adenosine’s receptor pathways. Other waste products
also build up in the brain, and if they’re not cleared away,
they collectively overload the brain and are thought to lead to the many
negative symptoms of sleep deprivation. So, what’s happening in our brain
when we sleep to prevent this? Scientists found something called
the glymphatic system, a clean-up mechanism
that removes this buildup and is much more active when we’re asleep. It works by using cerebrospinal fluid
to flush away toxic byproducts that accumulate between cells. Lymphatic vessels,
which serve as pathways for immune cells, have recently been discovered
in the brain, and they may also play a role in clearing
out the brain’s daily waste products. While scientists continue exploring
the restorative mechanisms behind sleep, we can be sure that slipping
into slumber is a necessity if we want to maintain our health
and our sanity.

i know that noone believes it, but i sleep an hour a week. sometimes less. and its even more interesting that i have narcolepsy and cataplexy. i feel superhuman, the lack of fatigue and ability to function has been suprising. i disagree with many of the "facts" and some cultures see sleeping as apon waking, they rename the person, and consider the waking person as a fresh spirit. like when u sleep, each imdividual wakes as a reborn soul. thomas edison, jp steinmetz, thomas jefferson, elon musk, frank zappa…. the most brilliant minds were product of very little sleep. ive made breakthroughs and discoveries that the common person would not be able to even contemplate or imagine, and the surrounding enviornment through the eyes of someone who rarely sleeps reveals itself as a different realm with scensory perception. causes many realizations and potentials that ordinary society would roll eyes at. the meaning of life and its construction and location, realized by someone in actuality is only mocked and judged as insanity when communicated with honest report of present perception. lets pretend i havent figured it all out, and everything is fine. maybe i could sleep at night. maybe id never sleep again…. neither one can be unseen or unlearned, forgetting about what all this means is unlikely. good luck to the world, maybe im my way out the door. maybe noones brave enough to find the door. i found it. and the implications are astounding. i figured it all out. what where when why and how. and who we are is more important that what we have been told. just so yall know. ¥∆¥

When younger I still studying, I still remember spending 3 sleepless nights and sleeping only on the 4th one… it was always to finish reading a book … and I did never fall ill … was always sharp, and got a super memory.
Now, I'm older, work routine made me loose my reading hunger and I go to bed everyday for a minimum of 4 hours when it's not my usual 6 or 8 hours … I'm always tired by the morning, hate going to work, and forget even people's names …
Why? Because I hate my life, my job is just meant to make ends meet, and nobody matters really …
It has nothing to do with sleep, I lost the will to enjoy life.
Personally, till now, when I spend 3 to 4 days sleepless on something I like, I still feel great and never get irritated or tired … The the only thing that screws my day is when I sleep for 8 h knowing that the 16 remaining ones of the day were nothing but time waste, i.e. a part of my life I lost for absolutely nothing!
This whole theory of sleep deprivation I keep hearing makes no sense for me!

So I read online that it says that we don't fully understand why our brain will hallucinate when sleep deprived. What if your brain is just to exausted to not know between reality and what your Makin up in your head. for example you haven't slept for 48 hours and so your friend is at a store you start thinking well he might steal something. your brain will flip that around to what you see. Simply stating that your brain can't tell what is real. Your brain gets mixed up. How do we know what's a actually real and what is not when sleep deprived. Like I said your brain is too tired to know the difference.

I've experienced what feels like slight temporary blackouts from sleep deprivation. I'll think a thought or do a simple action and once I've done it, it's gone. I don't remember what I did or said. It's kinda scary.

There are so many people defending the school systems lmao. like are you blind? here's a little glimpse of my schedule:
wake up at 5, leave for school at 6:30, get home by 3:20 (on Tuesdays by 4, because of piano lessons).
do homework until 8-9 pm. about this: There are distractions, yes, but they're not electronics. There's a lot of noise in the house. A bunny and dog to attend to. Whatever my parents or siblings need me for.
Eating also takes about 1-2 hours. Then getting ready to sleep. I also have braces so it takes a little while longer to clean them out. Then my talking to friends because having a social life is also important. Then trying to sleep by midnight because that's the only personal time I get.
On Wednesdays, I have youth group (I'm Christian). Saturdays are somehow always busy- cleaning, again, out with friends, getting ahead on homework, and catching up on sleep. Sundays I have church until 2, since I also have to eat. Then it's back to school after that. And the cycle repeats, endlessly.

Assuming 8-4 school time, that’s 8 hours off the day, 10 hrs of sleep, that adds to 18 hours, you’re left with 6 hrs for studying, socializing, working “if yoy do”, doing homeworks, doing projects, commuting, eating, etc.. wow..
