EVERY DAY EACH OF US WILL EAT ABOUT 22 TEASPOONS OF SUGAR. THAT’S WHY THIS WEEK, THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION IS DOING THE MY GLASS IS WHY CHALLENGE TO LIMIT SUGARY DRINKS. JENNA JAYNES HAS BEEN DIGGING THROUGH THE RECYCLING TO SEE HOW SOME OF OUR FAVORITE DRINKS STACK UP. GOOD MORNING DAVE AND SERESE, THIS IS THE RECYCLING FROM THE PAST WEEK HERE AT WOWT. I WENT THROUGH IT TO SEE WHAT IT IS WE’RE DRINKING AND JUST HOW MUCH SUGAR IS IN SOME OF THOSE ITEMS. SO– LET’S START WITH A CAN OF COKE. THAT HAS 39 GRAMS OF SUGAR– OR ALMOST 10 TEASPOONS OF SUGAR! THAT’S JUST LESS THAN ONE TEASPOON AN OUNCE. MOVING ALONG TO MOUNTAIN DEW. THIS BOTTLE– 77 GRAMS, 19 TEASPOONS, AGAIN, JUST SHY OF ONE TEASPOON PER OUNCE. THEN THESE ENERGY DRINKS– ABOUT 12 TEASPOONS IN THE MONSTER AND RED BULL. WHAT’S ALL THAT SUGAR DOING TO OUR BODIES? IN OUR BRAINS– IT’S RELEASING DOPAMIME SO SUGAR IS ADDICTIVE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE. IT ALSO DRASTICALLY INCREASES YOUR CHANCE OF HEART DISEASE– THE NUMBER ONE KILLER IN THE US. IT ALSO MAKES YOU AGE FASTER AND STRESSES YOU OUT MORE. AND IN KIDS– IT CAN MEAN SOME MOOD BEHAVIOR ISSUES. SO DAVE, SERESE FROM WHAT I CAN TELL FROM OUR RECYCLING– OUR ENTIRE NEWSROOM MIGHT NEED TO TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE THIS WEEK.
