How to make a hoppy beer – without the hops

By Brian Lemay No comments

Do you like “hoppy” beer? Researchers found a way to give beer that “hoppy” taste without using real hops. They use genetically modified yeast in fermentation, to give beer the taste of hops. Why not use real hops? Growing hops uses energy, fertilizer, and lots of water. 50 pints of water are needed to grow enough hops for 1 pint of beer. Taste-testers at Lagunitas Brewing Company thought the modified beer was more hoppy than a control beer.
