How to Buy a Wine Decanter – The California Wine Club

Hi and welcome back to The California Wine
Club’s Wine 301. Our Wine Decanter series. Today, we’re going to be talking about how
to buy a wine decanter. Most people don’t realize that wine decanting goes back almost
as long as people have been making and enjoying wine. The ancient Romans used them as part
of their home decor and the Venecians brought them back during the Renaissance period with
the style of the current glass decanter with the long thin neck and round body. And that’s
still one of the most popular decanters used today. Wine decanters come in all shapes and
sizes and they come in all price ranges as well. Anywhere from $20-$30 per decanter all
the way up to several thousands of dollars. One of the first things to realize is price
will not make a difference in the decanting process. The amount of surface to air ratio
that the wine receives will make the biggest difference on how fast your wine will decant.
Once you have decided on a budget, the next decision will be to find the right decanter
for you. Some of the decanters out there are so beautiful, they almost look like a piece
of art. But it can make it difficult to pour your wine. Other decanters may be difficult
to clean based on their shape and every decanter has to be cleaned after each and every use.
So be careful in the decision you make. Some decanters are very fragile. And you have to
factor in that clutz factor when cleaning. We recommend a wine decanter that has both
form and function such as the classic style of the wide base and the long thick neck provides
maximum aeration for that timeless look. Make sure to stay tuned for our next video, the
care and cleaning of your wine decanter. Cheers! From The California Wine Club.
