Government shutdown impacting Maryland alcohol industry

THE POTENTIAL TO LOSE 25% OF
THEIR BUSINESS IF THE SHUTDOWN
GOES ON LONGER. BUSINESS IS BOOMING AT HEAVY
SEAS IN HALETHORPE, BUT THE
RECENT GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN HAS
FOLKS HERE WORRIED ABOUT THE
FUTURE.>>WE HAVE PACKAGE DESIGNS THAT
NEED TO BE APPROVED THAT WE NEED
SEVERAL MONTHS OF LEAD TIME TO
PRINT THE PACKAGING. LOWELL: FOUNDER HUGH SISSON
EXPLAINED TO US THE ALCOHOL,
TOBACCO, TAX, AND TRADE BUREAU,
OR TTB, A DIVISION OF THE ATF,
IS CLOSED. THE TTB APPROVES LABELS AND
PROCESSES PERMIT REQUESTS FOR
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE COMPANIES
AROUND THE COUNTRY, AND THE
BACKLOG IS CERTAINLY PILING UP,
WHICH, ONCE OPEN, COULD DELAY THESE REQUESTS FOR MONTH
>>WE HAVE PROBABLY 10 OR 12 NEW
PRODUCTS SCHEDULED TO COME OUT
THIS YEAR. IF THEY DON’T COME OUT I MAY HE
OFF BY 20% OR 25%. THAT IS NOT A TENABLE POSITION. LOWELL: AND IT’S NOT JUST
LIMITED TO BREWERIES.>>RELYING ON INTRODUCING
PRODUCTS TO STAY RELEVANT IN THE
MARKET. LOWELL: JIM BAUCKMAN WITH GROW
AND FORTIFY, WHICH OVERSEES THE
BREWERS ASSOCIATION AND
DISTILLER’S GUILD, SAYS WINERIES
AND DISTILLERIES ARE FEELING THE
PAIN AS WELL, ESPECIALLY NEW BUSINESSES THAT HAVE NEW
PRODUCTS THAT THEY NOW WILL HAVE
TO PUT ON HOLD.>>THE LONGER THIS GOES ON THE
LONGER INNOVATION WILL BE SLOWED
DOWN AND OUR MEMBERS WILL NOT BE
ABLE TO INTRODUCE NEW PRODUCTS
TO THE MARKET. LOWELL: BACK AT THE BREWERY —
>>IF THEY DON’T GET THIS FIXED
SOON A LOT OF SMALL BREWERS WILL
BE IN DEEP STUFF BECAUSE WE
CAN’T PRINT ANYTHING UNTIL WE
GET THE FEDERAL LABEL APPROVED. LOWELL: MOST HOPE THAT THINGS IN
D.C. WILL BE WORKED OUT SOON,
BUT IF THIS GOES ON FOR MONTHS
IT COULD MEAN REAL TROUBLE FOR
THE ALCOHOLIC AVERAGE IND

So stop whining and call your representative and tell them to fund the wall.
