With or without alcohol? Chilling out? Celebrating? Just graduated? Do you celebrate with, or without, alcohol? Do you know why alcohol is extra harmful for teenagers? Let’s take a look at some facts: Beer, wine and strong liquor contain alcohol in different strengths. The size of the glass fits the strength of the alcohol. If you don’t use the right size glass, your alcohol intake could be much more than you expect. Especially if you drink alcohol straight out of the bottle, or mix it in a longdrink. Ten minutes after your first drink, the alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream through your stomach. And is carried through all the organs of the body, including your brain. This is why you start to feel lightheaded. Did you know, that girls get drunk more quickly because they don’t have as much body water as boys? Lot’s of people like to drink alcohol. For instance for social reasons. But are you really as social as you would like to be under the influence of alcohol? Alcohol makes you feel different. You can start to feel cheerful and confident. Or you can start to feel angry or sad. That is why many fights occur in nightlife. Alcohol numbs your brain. You can’t walk or talk straight anymore. And sometimes end up doing things you later regret. Moreover, your vision get’s blurry and your reaction time slows down. So, driving? Bad idea! If you drink lot’s of alcohol in a short period of time, you can end up having a black out. And won’t be able to remember things you did or said. Untill you see the awkward photo you are tagged in the day after. Or, you can get an alcohol poisoning. At this point you drank so much that your breathing stops and you become unconscious. Teenagers are more prone to alcohol poisoning. That is why, in Holland, you are not allowed to drink alcohol under the age of 18. So already start drinking before heading into town, is an extra bad idea. It takes your liver up to 1,5 hours to break down a standard glas of alcohol. So let’s do the math: You drink 5 glasses of alcohol between 24.00 and 03.00 at a party. You need to get up at 07.00 the next morning in order to be on time for your weekend job. But you are still not sober at that point. A cold shower, drinking lots of water, eating or vomitting. Nothing will get you sober more quickly. If you drink alcohol, you can have a hangover the next day. Alcohol removes liquids from the body. It is this dehydration that causes most of the hangover symptoms. If you start drinking alcohol at a young age, your chance of alcohol addiction at a later age increases. Your brain still develops until you’re 24. If you want to get the best out of yourself, give your brain the chance to develop right. If you put off drinking alcohol, you can focus, plan and remember better. That will save you studying! Do you think it’s tough that you can drink a lot of alcohol? Remember, that this is actually alcohol tolerance. And because of this you are more prone to alcohol addiction than others. And did you know that alcohol can make you gain weight? And that it can build less muscle tissue? Don’t drink to be part of the group. Nowadays less and less teenagers drink alcohol. The younger you start drinking, the more risky alcohol is for you. So postpone drinking until you are at least 18. But if you do decide to drink, pay attention to the following: Don’t drink more than 1 or 2 drinks a night, and don’t drink too quickly. Order some soda in between drinks to avoid a hangover.
